SOILE KORTESALMI: I Will Draw Until

The artist will be drawing a piece per  approx.1-2 h.

Soile Kortesalmi

I will draw until I -drawing performance

I will draw until I is a process-like performance, which explores the layers of time and construction of identity. The performance originates itself in 2025 Sydney, at the BigCI- Artists' residence, and it continues for an undefined amount of time in the countries the artist has lived in.

The starting point of the artwork is old photographs, which the artist has returned to their places of origin and adapted to contemporary landscapes. The places on video – former homes and everyday places with sentimental value in Sydney, Australia – carry personal history within them. The performance id a return to these meaningful, already passed thresholds.

The threshold takes form on a bordering wall, where a projected video, a sheet of paper and the person drawing meet. They share several time dimentions, atmospheres and actions. The artist traces moving image onto paper and draws herself; the repetitive action, drawing and the layering of the videos turn into a ritual, which aims to scan memories colored by nostalgia into true experiences.

Finally, the video will stop and the projectors light turn off. What remains is the drawing born in the momen – physical traces on paper, trying to mark the past. Drawing is an attempt to find a converstaional connection between what is lost and waht is; it is a reach for the past to become reality and integrate to identity here and now.
